How To Overcome “Gymtimidation”

Have you ever walked into the gym and immediately felt a sense of intimidation from your surroundings? The fear of others scrutinizing your every move? You’re not alone and most of us have been there. “Gymtimidation” comes from comparing your skills, status, and progress to others.  Luckily, there are ways to overcome this fear. Here are some tips and tricks on overcoming gymtimidation. 

Find A Gym That’s The Right Fit For You

Aside from convenience, you'll want to make sure your gym has everything you need to reach your goals. Find your niche. Whether it’s CrossFit, Group Training Classes, Personal Training, Boxing. etc. There is something out there for everyone ranging from beginners to gym veterans. Aside from the type of workouts available, there are other factors to take into consideration as well, including location, budget, and amenities. Before signing up for any membership, remember to keep your fitness goals in mind and choose the one that is most comfortable for you.  

Bring A Friend

To anyone who is ambivalent about hitting the gym alone or lacking in motivation, consider bringing a gym buddy. Having a workout buddy may make the gym a little less intimidating. The benefits may be surprising and encourage consistency, friendly competition, and learning opportunities. 

Go In With A Plan

We would recommend approaching the gym with a plan. Being prepared is the first step of gaining confidence and breaking the status quo of taking on gymtimidation.  When you are new to the gym scene, thinking of workouts on the spot may be anxiety-provoking. Technology and social media have given us access to workouts that are already put together, helping us move from exercise to exercise with confidence. 

Create A Workout Playlist 

For many, music and the gym are two peas in a pod.  On popular streaming services, there are numerous curated playlists to choose from that focus on high energy music.  If that’s not your cup of tea, you may enjoy creating a personalized playlist to keep yourself energized and pushing forward.  Listening to your favorite songs can boost your mood and distract from the fatigue you feel during a workout, and the other people around you. A great song can even promote bursts of energy.  We’d highly recommend having a playlist ready to go when you walk into the gym.

Get some new workout clothes 

When you look good, you feel good - and when you feel good, you play good.  Gym attire should be comfortable, promote mobility, and make you feel good while working out.
